I've been pretty devoted to Charlie Chaplin for a good portion of
my adult life. The reasons for this are clear: he has affected the way I look at life and the way I see the cinema from start
to finish, because he WAS the beginning of cinema. Everyone else grew from him and what he developed. The cinema was new when
Charlie first came to Hollywood: and it showed. He started raw, but quickly turned it around and developed a character reflective
of us all in many ways, no matter the race or nationality. People wonder why Charlie resisted the Talkies. Think about it:
with silence, he could appeal to all with body language, gestures and heartfelt emotion, things we all went through. With
sound, subtitles would have to be added, and much of the translation is lost that way. With silence, you have to use your
imagination and heart, instead of having it handed to you in an over-acted way. Many people who were talkie film stars were
not very good, simply because they had lost the art of pantomime sorely needed for the stage and for silent films. Not everyone
can act, but everyone can feel.....
Please feel free to use any of the info found on this site: it doesn't
belong to me, I never took the fotos, and I have no claim to anything except the text, most of which which I have written
myself.
